Rumors are that Apple OSX Leopard might be shipping as early as March this year. The same goes for the new iLife '07, and iWork '07.
I can't wait to get my hands on Leopard, and iWork '07. iWorkr is rumored to have a spreadsheet-like program called
Numbers. Finally an 'alternative' for Microsoft Excel. iWork's Numbers will probably still be overkill, but it beats the rosetta version of Microsoft with the gazillion features and tools I never seem to use.
No idea what iLife '07 will bring (haven't had the urge to find out, since '06 still works fine). I guess I'll download a trail ;-) , and decide then if I really need it.
Leopard and iWork will definitely be purchased by me (if it has the spreadsheet program).
I'm not that much into widgets and all that stuff. But today I found one which is realy cool. it's called
iStat nano. It displays the following things on your Dashboard:
- Fan speed
- CPU, Chasis, GPU and ambient temperature
- Network connection (throughput, bytes sent and received)
- Memory overview
- Current processes
- etc.
The developper has several other nice widgets and programs which are all system related.
Switching to DRM-free music....
I couldn't agree more.
I have several wireless devices in the house. Some of them are not capable of connecting to 802.11g (54Mbps) networks. For these devices I have an older Linksys Accespoint (802.11b / 11Mbps). For my other wireless devices (Mac Book Pro, and a Windows Laptop from work), I have a Speedtouch DSL router with builtin 802.11b/g wireless.
Somehow my Mac has some problems connecting to the faster networks. But the problem is that this used to work correctly in the past. The last couple of weeks everything works fine in the beginning, but after a while the connection gets terminated, eventhough the wireless indicator displays full reception.
Switching the 54Mbps network to the Linksys access point (which also support this) is not helping. The only thing that keeps working is connecting to the slower 11Mbps network. I also tried modifing security settings (changed from WPA-PSK to WEP), but that also gives problems. I even tried different wireless settings (changing channels,SSID's, etc.)
I found some possible solutions, like removing the
com.apple.airport.preferences.plist file in
/library/preferences/SystemConfiguration/. This removes all settings concerning the wireless networks for the airport. The result is that you need to reconfigure all wireless networks. After the reboot and reconfiguring the wireless networks, it seems to work a short while.
Another thing, which is very peculiar, is that it seems to happen mostly late at night (like 10 minutes ago). This could be a coincidence, because that's when I use my MBP the most. It's is more than annoying. It's driving me crazy. I have even thought about buying a genuine Airport Extreme, but only if I'm sure that it solves my problem......
AAAAAAAAAAAARGH
in December 2006, Cisco (Linksys) launched a new product called the '
Iphone'. This week, Apple launched the much anticipated '
iPhone'. This resulted in speculations on the Internet. Is Apple allowed to use the word 'iPhone' for the new gadget?
Lawyers say that Apple might be heading for a huge lawsuite over the term 'iphone'... Why? Because it seems that Cisco canceled the patent on the word 'iphone'. Just another way of generating lots of free publicity if you ask me.
Just
search for 'iphone', and see for yourself.

Well, Steve Jobs introduced the
Apple iPhone at MacWorld 2007. The new phone features:
- Phone (duh)
- Internet
- 4GB or 8GB iPod with all the usual iPod features (and widescreen!!!)
- POP3 and IMAP mail support (free push-IMAP with premium Yahoo accounts)
- All touchscreen, no 'normal' keyboard or stylus.
- Runs on OSX
- Available in Europe 4th quarter 2007, and will probably cost around 500 euros
Well, I know what I want for X-mas this year :-D
UPDATE: I just saw the actual keynote, and I must say that the iPhone is really impressive. Can't wait till x-mas...... must have.... NOW!!!!
The highly anticipated MacWorld 2007 starts tomorrow with Steve Jobs' keynote (18:00 hours CET). During this keynote, Steve will discuss the last years highlights, but will also introduce, or comment on the new hardware, and software which will be release this year.
The following items are rumoured to be announced/introduced:
- iPhone (phone, PDA, music player hybrid)
- iTV (a sneak preview was provided in 2006)
- Dual Quadcore Mac Pro's (8 cores instead of the current 4 cores)
- New Apple Cinema Displays (larger, and improved with the Apple iSight)
- More info on the new features in OSX Leopard
Anyway, I'll be scouting the Internet tomorrow for 'live' coverage of the keynote. Hopefully a decent video stream will be available for those who can't attend the keynote.
So, if I'm not responding to phone calls, e-mail, or on IM......
My current iPod (Photo, 20GB) started to give funny noises. If I gently shake it, I hear weird crackling noises from, what I think is, the internal drive. I had the same thing when we were in Tibet last year. That time the entire iPod refused to work permanently. Brought it back to the shop, and it got repaired (or so I was told). No the same thing is happening all over again :(
I just hope that the iPod will remain working for the next one or two months, because there might be a full screen video iPod early next year :P
So, anyone wanna buy a 20GB Photo iPod (it's little over a year old)?
According to
AppleInsider,
Parallels is preparing a humongous
update on its virtualization software 'Parallels for Mac. Here are a couple of the new features:
- Drag and drop of files between the Virtual Machine and the Apple desktop.
- Seamless scaling of the virtual desktop.
- Bootcamp support, which enables the user to boot the Windows OS on the Mac in Parallels without the need for a reboot.
Apart from the Bootcamp feature all these things will also be incorporated in the upcoming
VMWare release for the Mac. And since VMWare is the biggest name in the virtualization market, I hope that Parallels can cope with the competition. Especially, since the VMWare Virtual Machines can (or will) be used on both platforms. So all the VM's created on Windows (or Linux) can be used on the Mac.
On the other hand, Parallels will provide a migration tool for migrating VMWare virtual machines to Parallels.
Time will tell.
