Why Encryption Matters

John Oliver addresses the need for encryption in an hilarious way. The clip is ~18 minutes, but well worth it.

If you still think that encryption is only used for evil (terrorism, child pornography, etc.), and that governments / security agencies should need (backdoor) access to your data..... Well, I'm not gonna end that sentence.

Stephen Colbert On Amazon's Latest Patent

Amazon patented the practice of photographing objects against a white background... Huh? What the F*ck?

Well, that's exactly what Stephen Colbert thought;

I guess that I'm not the only one violating that patent.

Apple Sued For Porn Addiction

Chris Sevier, a 36-year-old man from Tennessee, got so addicted to porn videos that his wife took his children and left him. Now he has sued Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), saying the Cupertino, Calif.-based company failed to install any filter in its devices to prevent his affliction.

Why stop at Apple? There's also something as your Internet Service Provider. Those are the 'bastards' that transport the stuff from the Interwebs to your home. Or the actual sites for allowing people to see these appalling (for some) images / videos without a dozen age/religion/whatever security checks?

One of the best parts is the following:

Sevier claims that his addiction started when he “accidentally” replaced the “a-c-e” in Facebook with a “u-c-k.” Sevier said this F***book site “appealed to his biological sensibilities as a male,” and he started to prefer the images on the screen to his own wife.

The 'a' is nowhere near the 'u', and the 'k' is nowhere near the 'e' (on my keyboard), so how the hell is it possible to 'accidentally' type f-u-c-k instead of f-a-c-e

At least I learned something; I learned about the existence of a website that wasn't in my bookmarks already :-)

Star Wars Ringtones

It took me long enough, but I finally made some decent Star Wars ringtones for my iPhone. First the classic opening theme from 'A New Hope' and the mother-in-law (or ex-wife) special; 'The Imperial March'.

  • DOWNLOAD Star Wars - Main Title ringtone (for iPhone)
  • DOWNLOAD Star Wars - The Imperial March ringtone (for iPhone)

Both of the files are iPhone ready. I have no idea if they work/play on other phones / platforms.

And while I'm on the subject of ringtones;

All ringtones are created with Fission by Rogue Amoeba.

Best 'Unboxing Videos' Ever

It's the best, mainly because it's terrible. It's a montage of several unboxing videos of the Google Nexus phone/tablet thinghy. I guess I would have thrown the entire box + contents out of the window. Google can learn a lot from other companies like; Nikon, Canon, Leica, Apple... Hell, even the shrink wrap on Microsoft products are easier to remove. Unboxing is an integral part of the new gadget/thinghy experience nowadays.

Leica M and Lens Caps

Normally, I would have posted the following video in the Leica diary section, but that section is about totally serious Leica subjects only ;-). What the guy in this video is demonstrating (I hope) to the videographer, is that it's easy to forget that you put the lens cap back on the lens. With (d)SLR's you don't have this problem, since you're looking through the actual lens (unless you're blind or shooting in pitch black).

Fairness to say that I've had it happen to me a couple of times, but I notice my mistake at the moment I press the shutterbutton (+3sec exposure in broad daylight?? Must have forgotten something...).
