My current iPod (Photo, 20GB) started to give funny noises. If I gently shake it, I hear weird crackling noises from, what I think is, the internal drive. I had the same thing when we were in Tibet last year. That time the entire iPod refused to work permanently. Brought it back to the shop, and it got repaired (or so I was told). No the same thing is happening all over again :(
I just hope that the iPod will remain working for the next one or two months, because there might be a full screen video iPod early next year :P
So, anyone wanna buy a 20GB Photo iPod (it's little over a year old)?
Fiddling with my (Windows) mail server ended up in a 'serious' crash. The result was one week of mail down the drain :(. Even though I still had all my mail offline in my Mail.app, there was no way (at least not that I could find) to import it again in the IMAP folders.
I still have those mails in a backup of my Mac book Pro, so I could find the info with SpotLight.
If anyone has any ideas to import them back into the IMAP folders, please drop the ideas in the comments.
That was a Fridays night well spent :(
According to
AppleInsider,
Parallels is preparing a humongous
update on its virtualization software 'Parallels for Mac. Here are a couple of the new features:
- Drag and drop of files between the Virtual Machine and the Apple desktop.
- Seamless scaling of the virtual desktop.
- Bootcamp support, which enables the user to boot the Windows OS on the Mac in Parallels without the need for a reboot.
Apart from the Bootcamp feature all these things will also be incorporated in the upcoming
VMWare release for the Mac. And since VMWare is the biggest name in the virtualization market, I hope that Parallels can cope with the competition. Especially, since the VMWare Virtual Machines can (or will) be used on both platforms. So all the VM's created on Windows (or Linux) can be used on the Mac.
On the other hand, Parallels will provide a migration tool for migrating VMWare virtual machines to Parallels.
Time will tell.
I received an error today when I tried to access a SSL protected website. According to FireFox;
Firefox can't connect securely to because the site uses a security protocol which isn't enabled.
It seems that FireFox has removed the support for older/insecure SSL sessions. Some research showed that these setting are accessible through the 'hidden' configuration in FireFox. Just type
about:config in your addressbar and it shows the advanced settings of FireFox.
Put
security.ssl3.rsa_rc4_40_md5 in the filter bar, so that all other settings are removed from the current view. After that set the parameter to
true (default is false).
After this you're able to access the website. If not try enabling the other encryption parameter to true (which are set to false). Filter on
security, and the parameter are quite similar to the one discussed in this entry.
Note that there might be some security issues when you enable old(er) security protocol support in FireFox. These are disabled for a reason!!!.
Do I really need a multipurpose phone/mp3 player/camera?
The talks about the upcoming iPhone from Apple made me think. Sure, a Apple iPhone would definitely be cool, but do I need a cell-phone/mp3 player. I already have a cell-phone (which has a radio, and mp3 player functionality), and I never used the radio, or the mp3 player.
Somehow I like to separate functionality. This way I can buy a new mp3 player (read: iPod) without having to buy a new phone. Or, if my phone dies, I can still listen to my music. Or, I can listen to music while having boring conversations on the phone.
So, this leaves the question; Would I buy an iPhone?.. Maybe, but only if it's innovating. Just a convergence of a phone and a mp3 player won't convince me.
Please note that I 'own' a cell-phone since 1998, and I just got my third in a 8 year timespan. During this period I also got a iMode enabled phone for free, but never used it. Mainly because the menu on the phone sucked big time. So, the iPhone needs to be very special (and available in Europe).
However, I'll definitely buy the rumored new full-(wide)screen iPod with touchscreen interface. Just for replacing my 'old' (and still working) iPod Photo.
After a couple of Microsoft posts, a new Apple related post.
According to
MacRumors, we may get a Tablet Mac in 2007. Rumors or not, this would be very nice to have. That, and a Mac Pro, Mac Mini, etc. :).
Well, I guess that my tax refunds for 2006 are already spoken for :). It's could become an expensive Apple year for me. iMac or a Mac Pro as the substitute for my Windows PC. Replacing my Windows based server for a Mac Mini, new iPod with touchscreen and bigger display (rumor), a Apple iPhone (rumor), and now a Apple Mac Tablet (another rumor). I almost forgot the new announced iTV thing that they showed a couple of weeks ago......
Oh man, so many new Apple wannahaves, and so 'little' money.
The latest iPod killer from Microsoft (the
Zune), has been '
hacked'. A pretty simple registry hack (on your PC) is all it takes to access the device as a mass storage device and copy stuff form it.
Also, just rename any file extension to .jpg (image file extension) and 'share' them among other Zune users.
A firmware upgrade will probably disable these features in the future.
Another (unconfirmed) hack is to enable special features on the Zune, so that it can be used as a paper-weight :). I wonder if this really works, because I could use a good paper-weight.
Never had the urge of buying a console. No Playstations, Xboxes or whatever for me. Always enjoyed playing games behind my desk on my 1337 gaming PC.... untill now.
There's a new game available for the XBox-360. It's called
Gears of War, and it looks awesome. Perhaps I need to adjust my opinion on gaming consoles. The official trailer can be viewed
here.
